Is It Better to Buy a New Car or a Used Car?

If you are in the market for another car, you are probably wondering whether it is better financially to buy a new car or a used car. There are a lot of pros and cons to each and it really comes down to the choice that is best for your situation.

If you are looking to finance the car, the rates are much better for new cars. In addition, you will get the latest style, technology and safety features with a new car. Currently, you will get special factory incentives, rebates, discounts and free extra features on a new vehicle. New car warranties cover a lot more than they did just a few years ago and most new cars come with free roadside assistance during the warranty period. The short term maintenance costs are much lower for new cars as well. If you do end up buying a car that develops significant problems, there are lemon laws in most states that will protect you.

One big negative associated with buying a new car is that the sales tax is usually calculated before the incentives and rebates are tallied. Another big problem with buying a new car is that it depreciates as soon as you drive it off the lot. Some car buying guides suggest that new cars depreciate between 20% and 40% over the first 2 to 3 years.

One advantage of buying a used car is that you avoid that huge depreciation. If you purchase a late model used car, you will also get the remainder of the factory warranty. Since the purchase price is less on a used car, you will pay less sales tax and your car insurance will be less. These savings will be offset by the higher interest rate you will have to pay for the loan on the used vehicle.

Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of buying a used car is that you may be buying someone else’s problem. In most states, used cars are not covered under the lemon laws. You are also subject to getting scammed by an unscrupulous dealer or person trying to sell you a previously salvaged, wrecked or flooded vehicle. You can avoid this by getting a Carfax report on the car and having it inspected by a qualified mechanic.

Of course another issue with buying a used car is that it already has the wear and tear associated with its age and mileage. For this reason, your maintenance costs will be higher on a used car. Also, you will not know how well the car was maintained by its previous owner. Again, you should have the car inspected. The mechanic will be able to give you a lot of information about the condition of the car. Those things will include the condition of the brakes, tires, hoses, belts etc. You should never purchase a used car from a private party without having it inspected first.

Winch Vs Snatch Strap

In the world of four wheel driving, most people know about winches and snatch straps. They are very different in many ways (including the price) but will achieve very similar outcomes. A Snatch Strap is basically a long strap with some elasticity in it, allowing the strap to stretch up to 20% of its length. The idea behind these is simple – when a four wheel drive is stuck, you attach the strap to rated recovery points on both vehicles and one vehicle pulls the other out. The advantage of a strap that can stretch is that you can get a run up and when the strap takes up it will stretch and the energy is slowly applied to the stuck vehicle. If you did it with a rope that didn’t stretch, it would either snap or it would put some serious shock onto both vehicles.

Snatch straps are great for recovering in sand, mud, snow and even rocks. In many cases you only need a small tug anyway, so the stretch is not needed. However, in some cases having the ability to get a bit of extra momentum is needed. These start off at around $40 and are well worth having in your vehicle. The only downside though, is that you need two cars to use them!

Winches on the other hand, are a bit more versatile. They can be attached to another vehicle or tree, meaning you can usually get out even when you don’t have another vehicle around. If there is no trees, you can bury a spare tyre and winch off that. Winches have a number of advantages over snatch straps, but the main one is that they are slower and more controlled. Rather than having to build up a considerable amount of kinetic energy, you can slowly pull a vehicle out. This is very advantageous when you are four wheel driving on rocks. If you give a sudden tug to a vehicle on rocks you are likely to cause damage or make the situation worse.

Obviously winches are much more expensive (and you can only pull forwards unless you have a rear winch!), but they are very common on four wheel drives today. The biggest gripe I have with both winches and snatch straps is the risk that they can apply to both people and four wheel drives. If either snaps, some serious damage can occur. Many people have been killed using these, and they are very dangerous if used correctly.

My preference then (for everything except rocks) is Maxtrax. These are engineer grade nylon boards which you simply place under the tyres of your vehicle. From there, you can drive onto them and you are out in seconds. There is no need for excessive force on the vehicle (and you can do it without needing another car), there is no risk of anything breaking and going flying through the air and they are considerably quicker and easier to use. You will get a four wheel drive that is stuck on the beach out in half of the time it takes to rig up a snatch strap or winch (with no risk too!)

Synthetic Automotive Products

There is a wide variety of automotive products on the market today. They range from oils, to cleaners, to replacement parts, and everything else you can think of that goes onto a car. In order to make sure you are using the best products available to you on your car you should look into synthetic options. This type of fluid is made to last much longer than products that aren’t synthetic. You might be surprised as to how many different car products there are that can be bought fully synthetic.

The most popular type of synthetic auto product is motor oil. Traditionally people will tend to use non-synthetic motor oil because they don’t know all of the benefits that synthetic motor oil can offer. This type of motor oil lasts longer, prevents the build-up of engine sludge, stays clean throughout its life, and is tailor made to match certain applications. An example of this is a specific type of synthetic oil that is made for high mileage cars or a specific type that is meant for high performance cars.

Another popular fluid used in cars that can be synthetic is transmission fluid. Normally you do not check or change out your transmission fluid for extended periods of time. That is why it is important to have a fluid running through your transmission that stays clean and free of debris between each change. Using a synthetic option will also extend the life of your transmission compared to using different types of transmission fluids.

Nearly any type of fluid, grease, or lubricant that you put into a car has a synthetic option. If you want your car to run at optimal levels at all times and reduce the maintenance cost during the life of your vehicle you should always go with the synthetic alternative that is made available to you. This is as easy as specifically asking any automotive shop to only use synthetic lubricants and oils while they change the fluids in your car’s engine, transmission, and other components.

Why go with a product that is less effective and of a lesser quality when you have the option to use the best lubricants and fluids that are out there for your car. You want to properly maintain your automobile regularly and always use the right products during regular scheduled maintenance to help make your car run strong for many more miles to come.
